The corners are worn, and there are a few old library markings inside. Occasional small closed tears on page edges. Foldout portrait of Disraeli between pages 416-417 is splitting at the folds and has been partially repaired with tape. Small, thin tear at top of p. 589. Text is unmarked, save for occasional ink smudges that do not affect the readability. Pages tightly bound, though the book should be handled with care so the hinges do not crack. Volume 78 of THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, containing all weekly issues from January 1 through June 25, 1881. Contains lavishly illustrated reporting on the First Boer War; an expedition by explorer Frederick Schwatka to discover Franklin's lost expedition in the Arctic; the death of writer-philosopher Thomas Carlyle; the wedding of the future Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany; the death of Czar Alexander II of Russia, with many views of his elaborate funeral and of his body lying in state; the death of Benjamin Disraeli; the wedding of the ill-fated Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria; and anti-Jewish porgroms in Russia. Among the many fine engravings are a striking full-page portrait of Victor Hugo; a portrait of Czar Alexander III of Russia at the time he ascended the Throne; a foldout of the Battle of Majuba Hill; and numerous views of an "Old English Fayre" at the Royal Albert Hall. Corners rubbed through to the cardboard. Old library stamp and a few unobtrusive pencil markings inside, not affecting the illustrations. The foldout at page 25, and page 25 itself, are detached but present. Foldouts at pages 49, 89, 145, 193, 361, 545, and 625 have closed tears. Rear hinge starting to crack, but pages still attached. Good condition overall. Volume 85 of THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, containing all weekly issues from July 5 through December 27, 1884. Also contains 3 issues outside of this volume's run --- June 13, 20, and 27, 1885. Contains reporting on the completion of the Statue of Liberty (prior to its installation at New York Harbor); an International Health Exhibition in South Kensington; and most prominently, the Nile expedition to relieve General Gordon at Khartoum. Among the many fine engravings are a procession of Buddhist monks before an imposing statue; a foldout depicting lions attacking an African buffalo; depictions of the ships of the British Navy; and numerous views of the Nile Expedition. Also contains a foldout color map of the Sudan, with portraits of General Charles George Gordon and Colonel John Stewart, and color illustrations of English gentlemen fox-hunting. Measures approx. 16" x 12. Fair .
